Movie Review: Machete (2010)

Danny Trejo in Machete Photo: 20th Century Fox My interest in seeing Robert Rodriguez's grindhouse feature (co-directed by Ethan Maniquis) Machete was limited. When the faux trailer accompanied the Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse double-feature in 2007 it was funny, but I never took it seriously or considered it as anything more than a comical [...]

Movie Review: The American (2010)

Thekla Reuten and George Clooney in The American Photo: Focus Features I already saw Roger Ebert has compared Anton Corbijn's The American to Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samourai so I won't try to pass the thought off as an original, but it must be mentioned because the comparison is so appropriate. While George Clooney doesn't slide [...]

Movie Review: Takers (2010)

Chris Brown and Michael Ealy in Takers Photo: Screen Gems There's really no way of confusing what you think Takers will be and what it is. This is a C-level Michael Mann heist film that loses the grit in favor of gloss. It admittedly steals from The Italian Job while cribbing from a slew of [...]

Movie Review: The Last Exorcism (2010)

Ashley Bell in The Last Exorcism Photo: Lionsgate The Last Exorcism is more of an exercise in marketing than it is an actual movie. This low-budget, "found footage" exorcism tale is stamped with "Eli Roth Presents" in hopes of selling tickets based solely on the fact it's an exorcism film and the lowly producer name [...]

Paquin Joins Scream 4, Piranha 3D Gets Sequel, 11 11 11 and 127 Hours Trailer

We ALL Scream USA Today reported and Dimension confirmed Wednesday morning that Anna Paquin (woohoo!) and Kristen Bell (yawn) will appear in Scream 4. At this point you may ask who isn't making a cameo in Wes Craven's first Scream movie since 2000, but I'm pleased to see the True Blood star on board. Gulp! Despite lackluster ticket sales, the (dare I say highly entertaining, and yes, well reviewed) horror comedy Piranha 3D is getting a sequel. Say what you want about its gratuitious nudity, tasteless humor and total schlock value; I don't see any announcements about The Switch 2. Rock and a Hard Place You've got to give it to Danny Boyle; he's not afraid of tackling whatever topic grabs him. Case in point: The new 127 Hours trailer, about the rock climber who cut off his...

Movie Review: Piranha 3D (2010)

Photo: Dimension Films Piranha 3D delivers tons of blood, gore and boobs and wastes no time on character build-up or back-story. Before the title card even shows, a minor earthquake opens up an underground lake beneath the fictional Lake Victoria and thousands of prehistoric piranha are unleashed upon unsuspecting spring breakers. Essentially, director Alexandre Aja [...]

Movie Review: The Tillman Story (2010)

Pat (left) and Kevin Tillman in The Tillman Story Photo: The Weinstein Co. Amir Bar-Lev's excellent documentary, The Tillman Story, centers on Pat Tillman, an ex-pro football player that gave up millions in the NFL to join the Army Rangers in 2002 and died due to friendly fire in 2004 in Afghanistan. That, of course, [...]

Movie Review: The Switch (2010)

Jason Bateman plays with a cup of semen in The Switch Photo: Miramax Films You could look at The Switch any number of ways. Believe me I have in the course of deciding how I was going to tackle this review. I don't think you need to be a feminist to consider it disturbing. You [...]
